Why is the new XCOM an FPS? thats the punchline…
“Every studio we had wanted to do it and each one had its own spin on it, but the problem was that turn-based strategy games were no longer the hottest thing on planet Earth. But this is not just a commercial thing – strategy games are just not contemporary.” – Cristoph Hartmann, 2K Games
The old XCOM is pretty much hailed as one of the best PC games to ever exist. Seriously, check out ANY top 10 list online (except mine), and itll be either #1 or #2 in most.
The original games were strategy-based and required thought. From what I’ve heard about this “reinvention”, it does seem to offer a little bit more than most shooters do in regards to things like… squad control and… well thats about it I think.
This direct quote from good ole Cristoph Hartman, in my eyes, is one of the biggest problem plauging videogames these days. I know it’s a quote from a much larger interview (found here), but the way I read it is that hes looking directly at whats making money and want to latch onto it because its “contemporary”. I understand thats business, but fuck off.
The videogame market has grown so much since the days of Tetris, and growth only comes from inspiration and innovation. If a studio no longer tries to test themselves with something original, then what the fuck is the point? I play a lot of shooters myself, so my viewpoint almost seems a little redundant, but why on earth would you change some that had a perfectly balanced system and alternate game style just to make some money. I thought Bobby Kotick was disugsting, but this just pisses me off. Shame on you 2K for letting this idiot represent you. Let me rewrite this quote actually…
“Well, strategy games arent cool anymore cause…. well…. people dont um… uh…. buy em. why would we make something people dont buy?”
Moral of the story, Make what you have a passion for and invest in that passion. People recognize good work regardless of the commercial reception. The WORST thing for a creative mind to do is let the market dictate what you should or shouldn’t do.
PS: He also said this little gem,
““My vision for 2K is to be the Miramax of the early days, when you had all these great movies that won Oscars but were also commercially really successful. That’s what we want to do. “
